Springbank 10 Year Old 100 Proof

On ice at Hesperia Hotel, Madrid. It pours dark golden with some greenish streaks. Aroma is quite intense: vanilla, spruce, smoke, corn flakes, even some fig. Mouthfeel starts like a horse kick, really strong and almost sizzling, with a pungent tinge. As you let it rest in your mouth some savory and crispness do compensate that rather heavy beginning. Aftertaste is very long-lasting with umami flavors on the foreground, which make me think this scotch would be a nice pairing for shellfish.

@huineman I would have thought from your description the Springbank 10 100 proof would rate a higher score.

@DaveM I think in a copita or Glencairn, without ice, it probably would have...

Nose: Toasted barley, caramel, long dry grasses in late summer, dried chrysanthemum, honey comb.

Mouth: Clover honey, rock salt, lemon balm, sea breeze, hot ocean sand, very faint peat. A nice oily texture.

Finish: Medium to short due to excessive oxygenation in the bottle. Greek yogurt, hot buttered toast, faint peat, Himalayan pink salt. Leaves a nice sweet and oily taste/texture in the mouth.

I have not yet tasted the 57% (newer) version. I will do so very soon. I'm told the Stillhouse has an unopened bottle to be had. This review is strictly for posterity as both the 50% and the 57% are "unobtanium."

Update to my tasting notes:

Nose: Pink and white coated animal crackers (American), sea breeze over grassy fields, white floral, comfortable smell of old vintage leather car seats.

Mouth: Freshly opened printer paper, faint orange blossom, Morton salt.

Finish: a bit of brown sugar and vintage leather. Finish is medium not medium-short. The leather hangs on for a while and finally turns bitter leaving a grass sap flavor that reminds me of the finish on An Cnoc 12 a little bit.

Nose: We’re definitely in Campbeltown here : starting off with massive seaside brine and peat. Very coastal as can be expected. some leafy notes and also farmy ones. smoke and seaside spray a faint perfume of cucumbers. This is a big nose, pretty massive stuff. Palate: Wow. Powerful smoke and earthy peat on initial attack. Then briny turning sweeter and revealing malty and sherried notes then again turning salty. Finish: Long, lemon, brine and faint smoke with the memory of a fishing boat in the distance.

This is a stunning whisky, only 10 years of age, but whoa! what a nose and palate, It’s just like you’re on a fishing boat, sea spray in your eyes, and nose. Pleasure. If you are into Springbanks, you will adore this one, and if you are not, you need to try this one, as it’s a lovely example of the house style.Ace. Now, where do I find me a bottle of this one? anyone?

I bought a bottle of the Springbank 100 proof among others for a Scotch tasting. While the Springbank didn't stand out as the best, it was one that I repeatedly came back to as I drank the "left overs" for the next few months. It isn't the best malt I've ever had, but it's interesting and definitely worth trying.

The nose is slightly floral with a hint of grass and citrus. The palate is an interesting blend of salt with honeyed sweetness. There are also strong traces of fruit, especially orange and grapefruit. The finish was surprisingly smooth for such a high proof, and leaves the mouth with a touch of pepper and a light buttery sweetness.

Once I finished the bottle I wasn't compelled to race out and buy another, but I enjoyed it while it lasted and wouldn't be disappointed if I had occasion to drink it again.

This is a seriously complicated whisky. It hit me with so much at once that it took a second to get my bearings. So I relaxed and tried to go with it and thats when the genius of this malt hit me. It's not so much a refined symphony as it is a freeform jam. That's not to say that all the elements aren't in complete and miraculous balance! this whisky reminds me of Ornette Coleman and Prime Time, many different voices all working together in harmolodic synchronicity, becoming greater than the sum of their parts. Pure class!

As an ardent jazz fan and lover of Springbank this sounds like another for the wishlist!
