Nikka All Malt

At Domo Bar, Madrid, Nov 16 2015, writting down my impressions beside the NYT crossword.

It pours golden to copperish. Very sweet aromas of banana, caramel, muesli and molasses. Mouthfeel is both soft and oily, not really strong (so I advise against water or ice), leading to a well-structured smoky finish that saves the day. I'd say it's an apt one for beginners, but then again, what do I know.

The Nikka All Malt, as the name suggests, is a blend of only malts, in this case Yoichi and Miyagikyo. It is a rather cheap bottle (around 35 EUR) and therefor, in my (not so) humble opinion, truly bang for your buck. I tried bottlings from 2009 and 2012 before. The nose is very soft and sweet. Malt, butterscotch and even mokatine. Some double baked bread. A liquid candy, so to speak. Quite creamy on the palate, with again a lot of sweetness in the guise of butterscotch and toffee, followed by honey and – again, and I do not mind at all – mokatine. Hint al almonds and baked banana. Very sweet indeed. Admittedly, the finish is terribly short… but next to mokatine I now also get some cold coffee and vanilla. Sweet, sweeter, sweetest. When I bought my first bottle of this in 2010, I paid only 23 EUR. Today, you must add 10 EUR to that, but I still think it is worth its money.

Nose : Sweet almost Bourbon-like notes here. banana . Demerara sugar. lovely actually. some cinnamon too. I like this nose very very much, it feels much richer than the 40% ABV, lovely stuff.

Palate: Sweet with barley , sugar, spices, a little nutty edge, and sherry goodness.

Finish : Dark chocolate, with sweet nectar. a bit of wood, and maple.

This one is a little cracker, and at this price for 70cl it’s a no brainer, It’s something I need and want to have on my shelf. Lovely blending (vatting) of malt.

@WhiskyNotes

Nose: a very candied profile with marshmallow and vanilla. Some lemon sweets. Ripe apples and cinnamon. Honey. A bit of creamy toffee as well (hints of Baileys). Some tobacco, leather and the lightest hint of smoke.

Mouth: very mellow attack, almost shy and again very creamy. Barley sugar. Notes of raisins. A bit too sweet maybe. Oily aftertaste.

Finish: rather short with some honeysuckle, wood and coconut.

Lovely malt this. Must pick up another bottle.

Has anyone tried the Nikka Super Whisky?

a

Nose: very cream liqueurish, sugar, toffee, Bailey's indeed

Palate: first "nothing at all", gradually growing to a slight chili/pepper burn. Quite slight. Maltiness can be found in the background.

Finish: all too short; makes you want more. Very drinkable, this.

Sounds interesting.

I've got to get into some of these Japanese drams...

@markjedi1

I recently tasted this Nikka All Malt for the first time at a nosing & tasting in Ghent called 'Battle of the Stunners'. Stunners are good malts that are available for less than 50 EUR per bottle. This one was even presented as an 'uberstunner', meaning less expensive than 25 EUR.

This bottle contains only malt whisky, but from two different production processes: pot still and Coffey still. So it's a blend of Malt Whisky. Make sense?

The nose is incredibly soft (probably too soft for many) and sweet. Kinda buttery and malty.

On the palate, the oiliness is obvious. But it's very clean and very sweet. A true dessert whisky if you ask me.

The finish, while rather short, is sweet again, but also reveals touches of vanilla, dried oak and coffee.

Above all, this Japanese whisky is sweet, sweet and sweeter still.

I found this one better than their 'Super' blend.

This is one of those whiskies that can be difficult to put down. Very drinkable and a true bargain.

I absolutely agree.
