Glenlivet 12 Year Old 100cl

Glenlivet is one of the world’s largest distilleries, which I visited in September 2010. Their whiskies are noted for their fruity and floral elements, rather typical for Speyside. Let us go back to basics with the 15 Year Old which you can find in duty free shops (not to be confused with the 15 Year Old French Oak Reserve, by the way).

The nose is very fresh on white fruit. Apples, skins included, and pears. Caramel and vanilla. A bit simple, but not unexpected. Very sweet, though.

On the palate, it is quite light without a lot of punch, but a nice body nonetheless. Caramel comes first now, followed by green apples. Very soft spices. This is an easy whisky.

The finish is rather short on more of the same. It remains sweet until the very last moment.

A completely innocent, but flawless dram. Around 55 EUR for a one liter bottle. Quite nice on a sunny terrace.

My co-worker Jan brought me this 1 litre bottle in the tax free shop when returning from Spain.

I was looking forward to this, after having tried the (discontinued) 12 Year Old French Oak Finish version (replaced by the 15 Year Old French Oak Reserve).

The nose is extremely fruity, crisp with green apples and some pear. Peat and earth are absolutely absent.

The light and medium-bodied dram delivers the exact same tones on the palate.

The finish, which is rather short, is dry and clean. No heat whatsoever.

This could very well become a daily dram, but nothing more than that. The statement on the bottle 'The Single Malt that started it all...' seems a bit far fetched or at the least overstated.
