What is Connosr Distilled?

Well, we're glad you asked. Connosr Distilled is a free online whisky magazine, bringing you features, articles, community views, interviews, videos and more; it's part of www.connosr.com the social network for whisky enthusiasts.

I have to admit to something of a whisky blackspot when it comes to Canada - or at least I did before this year.

In my early books I skirted round a whisky nation for which I had little real love. For my two books published this year, 1001 Whiskies To Try Before You Die and The Whisky Opus, I employed Canada's top whisky writer David De Kergommeaux because I felt Canada deserved better coverage than I could offer.

And then something strange happened. Through Davin's writing I started to get a feeling for Canadian whisky. Canada itself started to come out of its shell and new and interesting whiskies started to appear, and earlier this year I attended the great whisky show in Toronto, where I was very impressed with the organisation of the event and the interest of the enthusiasts who attended.

And during that trip I went to Kittling Ridge with Davin and spent a great day with wonderful whisky maker John Hall, the man behind the Forty Creek range of whiskies.

The Canadian Wizard Whisky category was a one horse race and Kittling Ridge has swept the board. But it's not surprising because the whiskies are not only fine advocates for their country, but show diversity and creativity in their creation.

Here, then, are the results.

Completely deserved... Forty Creek has breathed new life into what used to be a fascinating style of whisky.

The Port Wood bottle is just fabulous.

Awesome run of awards for Fourty Creek. The best Canadian craft presentation whisky around. Congradulations well done. I have Barrel Select and will be picking up the Port Wood and Confederate Oak soon.

Agreed! Awards deservedly assigned. Forty Creek is IMHO the premier whisky produced in Canada. John Hall continues to innovate while producing a consistently high quality product for a reasonable price.

I was curious if the following bottles were considered, or will be under consideration for next year:

  • Collingwood (released in early 2012, iirc)
  • Lot 40 Copper Pot Still (just re-released, after an absence of several years, in Ontario)
  • Pike Creek Double Barrelled (to be re-released soon, also after a several year absence)
  • Alberta Premium Dark Horse (a new offering from AP)

I am particularly curious about Lot 40 and Pike Creek as I believe that they were highly regarded in their previous incarnation.

Hi there Thank you for all these comments. The whiskies you mention weren't entered and therefore weren't considered. But I am in New York where I tasted Wiser's 18 years old - wow! - and Canadian whisky was a big deal. I will reach out to all these producers next year.
