At a recent Amrut tasting which I hosted for my good friend Mr Ashok Chokalingam we were treated to three (as yet un-released) single cask expressions that the distillery had decided to put out. Of the three one of them was PX Sherry matured spirit served at a no-nonsense 62.8% ABV.

The nose is big and fruity with a lot of clove followed by a tumble of dark autumn fruits. Reminded me of dark currant jam on brown bread.

The palate is intense chocolate, cinnamon with toffee dusted with dark coffee powder. A few drops of water allows the flavors to mellow out and be enjoyed for longer. Very creamy mouthfeel.

The long woody cinnamon finish makes you sit down for a while and keep taking deep breaths.

This series of single cask releases is going to go a long way!

I ask because, even though your score is tantalizingly high... you rated the Intermediate Sherry (and port-matured Portonova) even substantially higher. Does the PX lack something in comparison?

This is a great whisky but I suspect the excessive ABV might be hiding some imperfections (this is just a wild stab at conspiracy theory!).

This whisky is quite intense and a touch rough around the edges but I think that's why I like it as well. It loses a point or two on balance, in my opinion, and I think that's where the Intermediate Sherry and Portonova reign supreme.

They are just insanely well balanced and the palate is a lot more complex with a basket of exotic flavors.
