Getting around on Islay

Hi All. Going over to UK for a month in late Sept. Wondering if it is worth taking a car over to Islay or if it is easy enough to get around the distilleries without one. We will probably go to Skye as well. Any advice appreciated.

Its really worth hiring a car on the island (also good for the islands economy) or taking a car over on the ferry. Some of the distilleries can be walked or cycled between with relative ease but if you are planning on visiting all of them (and a not a seriously keen cyclist ;-)) a car is highly recommended.

Spent my Honeymoon there last year, sometimes a car is the only way to get places in time for a tour but then you've got to drive back...Taxis are expensive but probably the best answer if you want to do some serious tasting which is probably why you are going there! Hire a car anyway as it's worth exploring the Island for non-whisky based activities. Also, make time for the warehouse tour at Lagavulin, it was our best whisky moment so far. Have fun!

Couldnt agree more re the Lagavulin warehouse tour, one of the best offered on the island. If you are seriously into your whisky I would also HIGHLY recommned the Craftsmans tour at Bowmore.
