If you had £60 to spend on Scotch...

How would you spend it? That's the amount I'm putting aside for myself over Xmas. I'm relatively new and inexperienced when it comes to whiskey (only been drinking it for a couple of years, so my range has been fairly narrow). I'm looking to expand my horizons and develop my knowledge. The bottles I've bought for myself are: Laphroig quarter cask - love it, my favorite. Yamazaki 18yr - delicious, but not as rewarding as the Laphroig. Auchentoshan 3 wood - This was the first bottle I ever bought myself, aged 19, and set me on the journey. It's nothing special now, in my opinion, but it holds a special place in my heart.

I am thinking about going for: Ardbeg 10 and/or Caol Isla. Mainly because I tried Caol Isla once and it was delicious, and Ardbeg 10 seems to be raved about everywhere I turn.

I was also thinking of using the money to spend on a few 35cl bottles so that I could try four or five different types.

Basically, I'm looking to expand my knowledge and experience, whilst obviously still enjoying what I am drinking! I'm a bit overwhelmed with all the information available, and not experienced enough to really know exactly what I'm after. Any help would be gratefully received in setting me in the right direction on my voyage of discovery.

Ardbeg 10 is great. But PERSONALLY, I would go with Caol Ila. Caol Ila is probably my favourite peaty whisky, but that is a matter of taste. I happen to like the Caol Ila style. But if you really like the Laphroaig, you won't go wrong with either.

Hey @Waspgumbo

You could blow it all on one bottle:

  • Glenfarclas 21 Year Old is £60 on the nose at the moment,

Or go for two blends (one premium, one budget):

  • Ballantine's 17 Year Old £44
  • Bailie Nicole Jarvie £19

Or go small but beautiful:

  • Lagavulin 16 Year Old (20cl) £16.95
  • Hibiki 12 Year Old (50cl) £35
  • Talisker 10 Year Old (20cl) £9.95

If you are looking to try a lot of new whisky then check out Master Of Malt site and buy a load of 3cl samples from the drinks by the dram range. The are some really good quality single cask samples under the boutique-y whisky company range and also the MOM single cask range. I reckon you could get to try at least 12 great whiskies for your money.I am gonna be ordering a load myself in the next day or two.Happy shopping

Bladnoch 12 YO 55% sherry matured is available at Master of Malt for £45, and you could add some miniatures.

You can order 350 cc bottles from the distillery if you live in the EU.

This is what I would do if I could..., well, if I didn't already have a healthy collection waiting to be opened.

Many thanks to everyone for replying with such helpful advice.

@OCeallaigh - such is my dilemma. I may have to bite the bullet and do one after the other.

@ Jean-Luc - Option 3 is something I was considering. Thank you for the recommendations, I will look into them. (Option 1 is also REALLY tempting!)

@Kian - That is a good suggestion. I wonder if I am experienced enough to get enough information from a 3cl bottle. That is my only concern. I still find I have to drink more than a few drams of something before I can begin to work out what is going on.

@ Nozinan - Is that something I can do from all the distilleries do you think? I'd love to be able to get a decent selection, but in enough quantity that I can learn a bit about each one.

Some distilleries offer small bottles, like lagavulin and talisker (200 cc). I've seen Bruichladdich 200 or 350 cc bottles, and I snagged a Caol ill cask strength of a similar size. Glenglassaugh also sells (sold?) its newmake in small bottles. Haven't tried that yet. Hmm, maybe as part of my NY tasting with the Whisky club.

Thanks for the inspiration.
