Speyburn Bradan Orach

Speyburn is a bit of an unknown distillery with a rather weak reputation. I have not got that much of experience with this Speysider. I have only tried two so far, this one included (but I did not write notes at the time). When I visited the distillery in 2010, I could not get in as it is not open to the public. Bradan Orach is Gaelic for golden salmon.

The nose is very malty and you can actually smell the yeast. It also has something bubblegummy, which reveals the fact that it is a vatting of young malts (probably younger than ten years). A hint of vanilla and pears. Peach? And then there is an aroma that I can only describe as sun tan oil. Not bad, but far from entertaining.

It is very light and rather sharp. Now I get apples and pears, but also loads of sugared nuts. Some banana. Quite spirity, I must say. And it is a little too dry to my taste. Midpalate it turns a tad bitter.

The finish is short, sweet and sour and sharp.

Not a very inspiring malt. Around 20 EUR, which is dirt cheap. But I would rather spend that on a nice blend.

I really don't know much about the Speyburn distillery, other than it is in the Speyside area. I could research it and give you some context, but I gotta lot to do tonight (having my big annual whisky party tomorrow night!) and don't have time, so…you lose. I tried the 10 Year Old, back when that one was the entry level expression - it was a nice, light, easy-drinking malt. I think this one (the name is Gaelic for "golden salmon") is the newer entry level expression. The 10 Year Old still exists; this Bradan Orach has no age statement.

The colour is a bright, golden amber. On the nose, buckets of honey, lemon and vanilla. Rather spirity for 40%, pretty rough around the edges. A little perfumey. Too young, methinks. Water seems to do little to the whisky on any level.

On the palate, not as sweet as I was expecting given the honey on the nose. Rather thin, nondescript. Some lemon, ginger and tart green apple. But underwhelming.

The finish is extremely, well, lemony, and rather short. This is quite disappointing (not that I was expecting fireworks). We have yet another Scottish distillery bottling young spirit, likely due to declining older stocks. Too bad. Well, give the 10 Year Old a try if you find it, but avoid this young whippersnapper.

This whisky is hard to get to like. I tried, not happen. The nose was fruity like apples and lemons. The taste was wooden tannic with a short uneventful finish.

@popery

Decent whisky. It was a good value at $15. Gentle fruitiness in the aroma. Buttery. Heather, bananas, apricots. A bit sweet and simple but pleasant enough.
