This 2012 Talisker Distiller's Edition smells of smoky peat mixed with sherry and cashews initially and then subsides to a floral orange blossom essence with a bit of vanilla and coffee. The nose is not terribly strong, but it is very nice.
The taste is sweet as one would expect from the time spent in a sherry cask but the sherry mixes masterfully with the peat, which does not dominate but enhances the flavor considerably. There is a nutty aspect that is quite refreshing, along with a subtle peppery coffee note that materializes on the back of one's palate if the tongue is saturated.
The finish is medium length without the heavy pepper of the 10 year, but it does have a bit of pepper mixed in with moderate peat and sherry, and also a bit of oak.
Time in the glass enhances this one, especially if the bottle was recently opened. There's no rush, just kick back and enjoy life.
I have an extra unopened bottle of the Longrow Gaja Barolo (a scotch that is "unobtainium," aka discontinued) that I would be willing to trade for another bottle of something else. No cash changing hands with a straight across trade is completely legal in the state of Oregon. I personally called the OLCC and asked about it. No shipping, just two friends with a scotch hobby in Portland Oregon trading bottles.
