Tobermory 10 Year Old

I haven't pulled this bottle out for a while. I bought it a couple of years ago because I enjoy Ledaig 10 and our youngest child is called Toby and so one of his many nicknames obviously is Tobermory!

Tobermory 10 bottled at 46.3% - I believe matured in first fill bourbon casks.

Nose: lemon meringue pie, toasted coconut, vanilla sweetness, caramelised sugar (toasted marshmallow), dried ginger, melted butter, olive brine, distant smoke, herbal (dried rosemary), slightly farmy, warm cream

Palate: honey sweetness, spices (cinnamon, clove), Szechuan pepper, vanilla creme chocolate filling, orange peel, salty, hay from an animals enclosure

Finish: Lingering sweetness vying with pepper spiciness for the forefront, slightly herbal, liquorice / aniseed, candied peel, a little astringent

Now I remember why I love this. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but it is a great example of an unpeated, ex-bourbon cask 'naked' whisky. Some find the farmy notes a little off-putting (I've seen it related to some very unsavoury things on Reddit) but it adds interest for me. I find the finish almost anaesthetising despite it being 46.3%. Another thoroughly enjoyable dram

I once tried an old 40% ABV version from a mini my mother had lying around in a cabinet (a gift from a co-worker who hailed from Mull) it didn't leave much of an impression but your review makes me think I should try and find a taste of this as well. I think it's been discontinued in favour of the new 12yr old.

Originally bought in November 2015, this little green bugger has been sitting in the cabinet since then and it's about time we give'er a good ye sippin' and all 'round review. Bottled at 46.3%, un-chillfiltered, and from the looks of it - seems to have no coloring added. Let's dig in!

Nose - Very fruity and winey. Sweet to the nose with hints of white wine, grapes, raisins, green fruit, apples, and buttery fruit cake. Creamy. Extremely pleasant, I could spend some time here and continue exploring.

Palate - Smooth but pungent and explosive, multi layered-sweet arrival yet quite salty, dry, fairly oily and herbal with hints of light smoke, leather, subtle ash, char, spicy saltiness all mixed perfectly into a rugged character. Big mouthfeel that constantly brings up a memory of varnishes, motor oils, burnt wood/soot yet remaining very well balanced and sweet/salty throughout.

Finish - Fairly long with a lingering dry mouthfeel, mild wood and medium/heavy salt on the lips.

Conclusion: Perfectly balanced and divine expression from Tobermory that should please anyone into complex rugged island malts with briny and full bodied flavour. Absolutely fantastic for cold fall nights and winter days. Not a whisky for newcomers. 4 drams in, must stop now! Thankee, Tobermory!

@RianC Yes, it's very unique I find. I've been looking for something like this for quite sometime. I'm hoping my bottle of Old Pulteney 12 will have similar characteristics. One thing to note is that even though this whisky is explosive in flavor, its astringent aswell and holds back anything that wants to poke out and dominate. Well rounded for sure.

Looks as if Tobermory is trying to improve the image of their 10 YO bottling. From what I've read and heard, (never having tasted it) the old 40% offering was often a grim affair with little to recommend it other than the low price. Although overly bitter, the new 46.3% version shows quite a bit of promise and affords some nice moments.

Nose: Herbal and malty with a reminiscence of freshly baked cardamom bread. Waves of citrus surge throughout and a sherry nuttiness hangs in the background.

Palate: Very light body. The initial barley sweetness succumbs to an absinthe like bitterness which predominates. Some peatiness, (which I missed on the nose) likely from the water source, as Tobermory uses un-peated barley malt for their 10 YO expression. Some spices zing about late.

Finish: Medium long. Mostly dry and spicy while maintaining that absinthe/herbal character to the end.
