Interesting, in your last list you placed AP30 over AP 25 and here they are reversed...

I think I've tried enough of these to form somewhat of an opinion.... my thoughts:

  1. I would put the Highwood 90/20 a little higher.

  2. I think all of the Forty Creek bottlings would have been so much better at 5% higher than what they were bottled at.

  3. The Lot 40, in my opinion, depends on which bottling, the older one (?10 YO) I liked or the more recent one that was just not as bright and special.

  4. I'd bump the FC Heart of Gold up a notch or two... my favourite of the special releases with the possible exception of the original Confederation Oak (in the original glass I tried it in...).

@Nozinan,

@Nozinan,

AP 25 & 30 are 1 and 1A. Which way is the wind blowing?

I didn't want to split hairs by listing batch numbers. These are all solid performers with many readily available at the retail level and some available from the informal sector, at a premium of course.

I agree wit @Nozinan in regards to 90/20 being higher, but that is my personal favorite Canadian along with the Danfields 21 which I have 1 bottle left and despite my emails still have no idea if it will ever be available again. You are right on with the latest batches of Wiser's Legacy being heavy on the black licorice. Used to be twizzler strength, now it's like those black cigars and pipes black licorice, too much.

Re: 6. Forty Creek Port Wood Reserve 45% abv Which release? 2009 or 2012?

@tfahey1298,

Good to see you on the board, hope all is well.

Both of the Port Wood releases have been grouped as one entry. I didn't want to split hairs and start naming batches and lot numbers for this list. I have tasted 2009 and 2012. I believe they are both magnificent expressions of John Hall's creative genius. I have a few 2012s (Lot 61) in the bunker, but none of the '09, which has been claimed by some to be a cut above.

I'd love to do a Forty Creek vertical tasting of all 10 Limited releases. Have you tried the 2016 Founder's Reserve?

@Astroke,

The top ten on this list are loosely ranked and could possibly change depending on the day or mood. The second half of the list is no reflection of my order of preference.

The Legacy 'black licorice' development is a direct function of the batch variance in lot No.40, which is a component of Legacy. Batch L15009 of Legacy is the last iteration I have found which predates the 'black licorice' dominant batches. The anise/licorice heavy batches are delicious, but vary from the spicier early releases.
