A cask strength beauty here. This bottling harnesses all of the quality of Coal Ila, sweetness, phenolic peatiness, that ever-present black olive. very nice
Nose: Islay, pungent, black pepper, peat, brine, phenolic smoke, black olive, but also some sweetness. With water fruitiness comes through more, complexity is always nice, but its still an undertone, the Islay dominates.
Pallet: sweet at first, then sandy and fragrant smoke, good dollop of peat and wet stuff, sherry wood and fruits, surprisingly drinkable neat. With water really knocks back the peat, goes a bit tarry and oily.
Finish: smoke comes in and out, black pepper, olive, dark chocolate, very mature finish. With water more of the same, maybe a bit more salty.
Mark neat: 8.9 with water 8.9.
This was one of my favourites from the Adelphi tasting. I'd love to compare this with the Coal Ila cask strength official bottling.
