A cask strength beauty here. This bottling harnesses all of the quality of Coal Ila, sweetness, phenolic peatiness, that ever-present black olive. very nice

  • Nose: Islay, pungent, black pepper, peat, brine, phenolic smoke, black olive, but also some sweetness. With water fruitiness comes through more, complexity is always nice, but its still an undertone, the Islay dominates.

  • Pallet: sweet at first, then sandy and fragrant smoke, good dollop of peat and wet stuff, sherry wood and fruits, surprisingly drinkable neat. With water really knocks back the peat, goes a bit tarry and oily.

  • Finish: smoke comes in and out, black pepper, olive, dark chocolate, very mature finish. With water more of the same, maybe a bit more salty.

  • Mark neat: 8.9 with water 8.9.

This was one of my favourites from the Adelphi tasting. I'd love to compare this with the Coal Ila cask strength official bottling.
