ardbeg airigh nam beist vs galileo

Have you tried both? Which do you like better? I like Beist. It's older, more sophisticated, and . . . the dreaded word: DISCONTINUED.

This chat is basically for those of us who used to drink Beist with relish & gusto, and now are debating about buying a bottle of Galileo.

I've tasted both, but it's been a while. Just now, I noticed that Galileo is actually rated at 91 on Connosr and Beist was 90. Interesting. Was that the early hype for Galileo, do you think? Now that the chips have settled, I wonder if people still like Galileo better.

Yes, I know, many of prefer the smokier peatier Ardbegs, and that's great! All power to you! I miss Beist and I'm wondering if it's worth spending $97 on a 12 year Ardbeg called Galileo with a lower peat to sherry ratio. Beist was older and perhaps more complex. But, alas, it's gone extinct.

What do you think? Is Galileo over-hyped or worth the 91 points on Connosr?

rigmole - I am with you concerning ANB; I like it more than the Galileo but think you couldn´t compare them as the Galileo is a complete different whisky with the marsala finish and it´s fruity and nutty aromas. The ANB is very edgy without fruity notes and very sharp. As rating figures are very much a snapshot of the current condition (and experience) of the reviewer and the whisky (batch variations; how long is the bottle open etc...) it is much more interesting to read the reviews and to compare your own ratings or impressions with the others. I would rate the Galileo in the mid 80´s ((4 or 85) and the ANB a solid 90 points.

@rigmorole i havent tried the Beist. so this is a pretty one sided point but i really dont think that highly of the galileo its a little bit 2 whiskies in a bottle rather than one cohesive dram, its not in the same league (in my opinion) as the uigeadail or the supernova

@Volks I agree that Galileo tastes like two whiskies at once, well put. Uigeadail is also basically two whiskies in one bottle, but in Uigeadail's case they meld perfectly into one. Galileo is Ardbeg with a side dish.

I still think Galileo is a great whisky and would absolutely rate it over 85. If someone gave me a bottle I would be very very happy. But I would NOT buy a bottle for the exaggerated price.

Haven't had the ANB so i can't compare them.

The ANB was one of my favorite Ardbeg's and I have one in my bunker waiting for the right moment to share. I have the Galileo and find it ok, I am not a big fan of the marsala wine finish. I wish I would have spent the $90 on a Cory which was one of my favorite Ardbeg's of all time or if I could find a Aligator I would grab that before the Galileo.

Ardbeg is becoming famous for gimmicky one off releases, some of which don't live up to their hype. I don't think Connosr's 91 is indicative of the generally held opinion of the Galileo. Most of the "experts" put it in the mid 80s. ANB and Uigeadail are my all time favourite Ardbegs. Now that my ANB is done I think I will replace it with another Uig or Corry. The Galileo sounds avoidable.

Big fan of the Beist. My favorite Ardbeg to date. Much less "in your face." I bought two bottles of the Galileo and regret it. I will not be opening the second any time soon.

I am also a big fan of the Airigh Nam Beist (still have an unopened bottle, picked-up at the Seoul duty-free). I also have most of the other Ardbegs (except the Blasda and the Supernovas) and find them a bit "too much" sometimes.

When I want to get back to the pure pristine taste of the Airigh Nam Beist, and despite my wide range of Arbegs, I find myself turning to the "basic" 10 year old, which surely has to be the most amazing entry-level Whisky of any distillery.

Agreed on the Ardbeg 10 @Olivier, it's the one that finally made me see the Islay light about 10 years ago and I have loved it ever since. Seems undeservedlyunderrated by many whisky drinkers, but I think it is the true benchmark for Ardbeg whiskies, perhaps along with Laphroaig 10 and Lagavulin 16, one of the definitive Islay whiskies in general.

Should be "undeservedly underrated." Sticky fingers this morning.
