This Ardmore 1998 was selected by importer The Nectar to celebrate their 15th anniversary (as well as a lot of other releases, by the way). It was distilled in 1998 and matured for almost a quarter of a century on a hogshead that yielded another 245 bottles at cask strength. Bottler on duty is Elixir Distillers, former owners of The Whisky Exchange, in their series The Single Malts of Scotland.
Surprisingly fruity nose with pineapple, apples and mandarin. In the background is that typical dirty puff with some peat smoke, but that is really understated here. The attention here goes to the fruity and sweet side of Ardmore and I confess... I think it's very good! After a few minutes of breathing, some maritime traits are added (not that Ardmore is on the coast, though, far from it) which reminds me of Talisker for a moment. It's not a punishment.
It is very clean on the palate. Again apples and pineapple, but also some charcoal, caramel, quince and gooseberries. Vanilla and white chocolate still come on quite a bit, but are quickly suppressed by a beautiful, salty touch.
The finish is long and sweet, while the smoke slowly fades away.
What a great Ardmore! About 180 EUR. Recommended. Thank you for the sample, Maarten!
