While the first release – 2016 AD – was only 2500 bottles strong and the second – 2017 AD – even less with 2477 bottles, for the third release Ardnamurchan released almost 5000 bottles. In this case, it’s spirit that matured on first fill sherry casks. I was very impressed with the first two spirits, as I recall. So expectations for this third release, bottled last year at 55.3%, are high.

Sweet and aromatic nose on dark fruit (rum raisins, dates) and nuts (both almonds and hazelnuts), as well as some clear hint of peach and pineapple. A bit of spices, but not overly much. Nutmeg and cinnamon. Some woodsmoke. Candied oranges, blueberries. It becomes a bit waxy, which is to my liking.

On the palate, the sweet fruit is immediately tackled by a big sweet and sour peat explosion. The spices of the wood are much more outspoken. I get sweet, bitter and salty notes. Bacon on the barbecue mixed with plum liqueur. Chili peppers. Very dry from the second sip forward.

In the very long, smoky and sweet-sour-bitter finish, the mouth is dried completely.

Good stuff. Let’s not forget that this is not yet whisky! Having said that, it’s the least of the three so far. The first – 2016 AD – remains my favorite.
