Auld Blends

I'm currently tasting several old blends - well, Auld Blends - but must admit that most of these aren't really to my liking. With old, I mean like Ainslie's from 1978, Ballentines Finest 1985, Big T 1990, Dimple 1980, Johnnie Walker Red, Black and Swing from the 80s, etc... I must admit, most of these did NOT overwhelm me, while I expected them too. Has anybody else had any experience with auld blends?

I didn't, but I would like to know what are the style differences from today's expressions in your opinion!

Well, they're simply not auld enough ;-) When connoisseurs are saying that old blends can be wonderful, they're mostly talking about pre-1970's blends. That said, I have the feeling they never overwhelm you with their sheer quality - they're just totally different from modern whisky and therefore incredibly interesting. It's still a relatively cheap way to experience this unique old-style profile without having to look for expensive single malts from that era. The main difference was that blends used to contain more sherried and smokey whisky than current versions, and more malt whisky altogether rather than grains. This usually results in a really nice nose, a slightly less interesting palate and especially something that we would find rough or even dirty compared to modern whisky. If you're lucky, you can still detect the coal smoke that is totally lost nowadays. In the 1970's and certainly in the 1980's that had already changed towards the current recipes (with a few exceptions of course).

@WhiskyNotes I think you are right about them not being auld enough. Only a few (such as the Ainslie's and a Harvey Mackays) were able to blow me away (sorta). I'll try to track down a few Really Auld Blends, then :) Being born in 1970, I'll take your statement as a compliment LOL.
