i got to try a few new scotches ive never had before today.
first was johnny walker platinum. it was actually quite good. second favorite of what i had today. nice flavor and surprisingly smooth. i liked it much better than the couple times ive tried the blue label. i wasnt impressed with blue at all. this was good, though.
next up was glengoyne 21 year. previously ive had their 10 and 17 year, and i have two bottles of the 17. the 21 had a much stronger sherry presence than the others, a bit more woody as well, but it was also harsher. just goes to show that longer doesnt equal better.
after that i tried balvenie 17 year peated cask. ah, perfection. im definitely going to pick up a bottle of this, even though its a bit pricey. it was excellent, the best i had all day, easily. great flavor, good balance of peat and malt and smooth as anything. fantastic. theyre becoming a favorite distillery, i dont think ive had anything bad from balvenie. the 15 year single cask and 14 year rum cask are both excellent as well.
i then tried ballentine 21 year. this was a let down. im not too surprised, as its a blend, but blends can sometimes be good. this was wasnt. even being aged 21 years couldnt help this whisky...
after that i had some more of the balvenie cause it was just so good.
last up was glenrothes. i think it was the alba reserve. this one was just bad, even worse than the ballentine. maybe i just had too much to drink already by then but it was bitter and awful tasting. im not too surprised, as ive never been a fan of glenrothes, but this was just terrible.
@buoy37 thanks. i think my nex tscotch purchase is gonna be a lagavulin, since my current ones almost gone, but after that i think im gonna ge tthe balv 17 peat. great balance.
