Let us put another couple of casks of Balmenach head-to-head. They are sister casks after all. I will start with this Bladnoch Forum bottling, a Balmenach 1983, cask 2411. The sparring partner is cask 2413, bottled by A.D. Rattray.

Honeysweet and creamy nose on all sorts of yellow fruit. Mirabelle, pineapple, peach. Some juicy apples too. Marzipan. Oats. Chocolate and coconut. Frangipane cake. Cinnamon and a smidgen of liquorice. Nice, complex nose!

Nicely oily on the palate. Powerful, too. Very spicy (ginger and pepper) and sweet. A tad too sweet, almost. Loads of honey, yellow fruit and vanilla. Caramel. Melon kicks in. And something minty.

Long finish, albeit rather sweet, but not so much that it becomes annoying.

Great Balmenach which proves that it is not always a good idea to use every cask for a blend. Thanks, Michiel & Mireille!
