I think you might like the Glenfarclas 15 yo. I think it's only matured in sherry butts, but it's certainly a step up from the Balvenie BW in my opinion. Lots of sweetness and spiciness in this dram.

Aberlour 12 is the same aged and it is aged in Bourbon and Sherry casks just like the Double Wood, but it is more sherried tasting. Another option is something like the Clynelish 14 or something.

Or Highland Park 12. Which is much better than the double wood in my opinion.

That Glenfarclas 15years old looks really interesting, A good step to get the the Aberlour A'bunadh? For the Highland Park, I will purshase a 18 years old bottle in a couple months.
