Ben Nevis lies at the foot of Scotland’s highest mountain of the same name. It was founded by ‘Long John’ MacDonald, an infamous smuggler, in 1825. There are not many official releases, but all the more independent ones. This is one by Berry Brothers, bottled at drinking strength in 2014.

Honeysweet and very fruity nose, close to being candy-like. White fruit comes first, followed by caramel and a truckload of honey. Hints of nuts and candied pineapple. Very summery, if you ask me.

Nicely oily and immediately very sweet, but now with a spicy edge. Think butterscotch, mokatine and even mocha that precedes some liquorice. A pinch of pepper and ginger. Very accessible and actually a liquid dessert.

The finish is surprisingly long, soft and juicy.

It does not always have to be super complex to be really good. Less is more and that certainly is the case here. Very good Ben Nevis!
