This is the oldest Ben Nevis I ever tried. It is no less than 45 years old and was bottled from a sherry cask under the Maltman label from the Meadowside Blending Company from Glasgow.
Just like the 42 Year Old from Alchemist, which happens to have the exact same ABV, the nose offers tropical fruit with banana in the lead, but it is a lot less creamy. This one also has jute and even a hint of wet cardboard on the nose. I even get a hint of paint. That fades after a few minutes to be replaced by a nice, nutty aroma. Primarily almonds. Think marzipan.
On the palate, it is a bit oily and softly spiced on ginger and nutmeg. It shows quite a bit of oak, very drying, but the fruitiness keeps it on the right side of juicy. Midpalate, I get quite some citrus, like grapefruit and mandarin. Banana and something that reminds me of pineapple, retreats to the background. It even has a salty touch.
The finish is long and sweet, but does get pretty bitter towards the end.
A nice Ben Nevis for a good price (around 195 EUR is actually dirt cheap for a whisky 45 years of age).
