I confess, it had been a while since I had put a release of the famous German bottler Malts of Scotland on the lips. This is a young BenRiach from 2008 who matured in a sherry barrel. After 11 years, this resulted in almost 300 bottles at cask strength.

The nose is very aromatic and even a bit waxy. I smell scented candles, brown sugar, fresh apricots and dried peaches. Caramel and candied oranges. In addition, some notes of the oak, in the form of woodsmoke and herbs. Completely tucked away – and that's a good thing – is a small hint of sulfur, as if someone is playing with his Zippo at the back of the class.

Creamy body. Immediately very spicy. Cloves, cinnamon, ginger and black pepper. Caramel and brown sugar come first, followed by apricots and peaches. Pretty spicy, though. The alcohol makes itself be felt. Raisins and pomelo join the party. Very rich and wholehearted, this BenRiach.

While the spices are fading away, I get typical sherry notes in the form of dried fruit, supplemented with some hazelnuts and a hint of banana – this finish is very long!

Excellent. Thank you, Manny!
