I confess, I have a soft spot for the Diageo Special Releases, even more so in these last few years. Because of some more disposable income, I can afford one of those now and again. But I did not buy this one, no, it was a sample given to me by my friend Bart A who also goes by the handle Foamy. Thanks, buddy!
A creamy nose that bursts with sherry… a tad of sulfur included. Since I’m not Jim Murray, I’m not bothered by it. Very soft and subtle on raisins, molded wood, brown bread and freshly polished leather. Modest, to be honest. Some cinnamon, cumin and oregano. You can actually smell the potential.
Slam, bam! On the palate, it’s a totally different beast. Powerful, spicy and in your face. And I’m not just talking about the dark and dried fruit – plums, raisins, dates, blackberries – but also the struck matches and hot spices. Cloves, nutmeg, chili pepper. This is so good!
The finish is fairly long, remains sweet and spicy, softly drying. The spices linger for an eternity.
I think this one can take a few drops of water, but I did not want to risk ruining my beautiful sample. Devine monster.
