When visiting a distillery, one often gets the chance to fill a bottle from a cask in the visitor center. It is no different at Benromach. The sample that I am trying today was filled by Teun van Wel, Dutch whisky aficionado and self employed travel agent. Teun filled his bottle with number 62 on 28th April 2011. It came from bourbon cask 98, filled on 5th March 2001.

I had only just poured the sample and my study was immediately filled with a wonderfully, herbal scent. Burned malt, almond cookies, brown sugar, vanilla and ginger. After a while it gets something that reminds me of cooked vegetables, but of the good sort. The longer you wait, the sweeter it becomes with the emphasis on the cookies.

Despite the high ABV, the attack is very soft. Quite creamy and mouth coating. It turns pretty peppery midpalate, but the sweetness dominates and is a nice fulfilment of the promise from the nose.

On the finish, fairly long, vanilla erupts once more.

The most be one of the best Benromach I have tasted to date. It will do you no good, though, since the cask was only available at the distillery and is now long gone. Thanks for the sample, Teun. Good luck with your travel agency.
