This Benromach may be only 5 years old, but I find it refreshing to have both an age statement and the possibility to buy this bottle at a fair price (around 35 EUR in my neck of the woods). It matured on a mix of bourbon and sherry casks.

The nose is surprisingly rich on sweet breakfast cereals on the one hand and loads of citrus on the other. Make that a whole lemon, zest included. Some green banana and vanilla. Some tonic. The whole is wrapped in a mildly smoky jacket, that quickly loses terrain. Yes, you can smell that this is young, but it does not bother me at all.

It is somewhat light in the mouth, true. And a lot less sweet than the nose promised. The fruit does not stand a chance against the sweet peat - the development of smoke is quite nice - and some mineral notes like flints. Salted liquorice. Grapefruit and a handful of pepper. You can almost literally taste the grain. Reminds me somewhat of whisky from way back when.

The finish is medium long on liquorice, salt & pepper and some cold tea.

This is value for money, no two ways about it.
