I have enjoyed a number of peated whiskies that were not produced on Islay. Talisker 57North is excellent, but my all time favourite would be Amrut Peated Cask Strength (Batch 12 I believe).

My favorites are any Longrow, Ballechin (based just on the one bottle of the port-matured one I'm currently drinking), Talisker 57 North, and Benriach 17 Solstice.
By repute alone, I'm guessing the whisky world at large would answer modern young CS Ledaig—and Brora! :)

Talisker 18, Amrut Peated CS go head to head, they are in the same 'taste' region as the Islay peat signature. Benriach 17 Solstice (peat/portwood finish) has a really different peaty taste, a welcome variation on the Islay's.

Did anybody ever had a Kornog? I read some great critics that make me think it that they may be the best Islay out of Islay.

Longrow 18 and Talisker 18. Either of them are excellent!

I love the Amrut peated CS but I find it considerably less smoky on the palate than its Islay cousins. My two preferred malternatives would be a whisky fässle Bottling of Ledaig or Swedish BOX whisky. I've had some marvelous peated single casks of BOX. I have no idea what the availability is like outside of Sweden though.

Thanks to @DutchGaelisch and his list for whisky likers, I asked myself what is the best Islay whisky which is not made on Islay . What is the best peated whisky outside Islay? Amrut ? Which one? Or is it Ledaig? Or Santis? Please surprise the peat heads among us?
