This Straight American Whiskey is released by the famous metal band Metallica. It was composed by Dave Pickerell (who passed away in November 2018) who was the Master Distiller at Maker’s Mark for many years and also put WhistlePig on the map. It is a blend of bourbon, rye and whiskies from all four corners of the states. It was finished in cognac casks! The Blackened refers to the patented Black Noise, which means the heavy metal music of Metallica is played in the warehouses to influence the spirit in the casks. The tremors the music causes impacts each cask differently. Batch 82 – the one in my glass – is the last batch that was made by Dave Pickerell.

Wood shavings, apples, dark caramel and candied oranges: that’s the nose of this whiskey in a nutshell. Then some raspberry and rose petals appear alongside some mint and aniseed. Unfortunately I also get quite a bit of hand soap.

On the palate it is very sweet on caramel, honey and… ouch! The soap becomes veritable shampoo. While mint and bakery spices try to salvage the palate a bit, for me this session is over. Some bitter oranges kick in, but they cannot counter the soapy taste I my mouth.

The finish is medium long and spicy, but leaves a very unpleasant soapy and sticky feeling in my mouth.

What a let-down. Nice story, but the whiskey leaves a lot to be desired in my book.

"Black Noise," huh? I didn't realize it had a maturation gimmick like that.
