The well-known German bottler Malts of Scotland has just released a whole new series of bottlings, in a completely new outfit (with a tube instead of a box). It is their so-called spring release, containing 9 bottles. We will be trying a couple of those in the next few days. We start off with a Bladnoch, a first both for MoS as for myself. Exciting.
The nose is fresh and sweet with loads of breakfast cereals on honey, pineapple cubes, gooseberries, citrus, lavender and freshly cut grass. A hint of vanilla. After some handwarmth grapefruit, gooseberry and young apples are the leading aromas, followed by a hefty helping of cane sugar. Very approachable.
The attack is piquant, peppery and very mouthcoating. Feisty for a Lowlander, to say the least. Again quite grassy. Loads of white pepper and a touch of oak, joined by grapefruit. A soft bitterness that is really pleasing to the palate. Orange zeste. Hint of salt towards the end.
The finish is long and zesty. Bittersweet at the death.
Truly a spring whisky, this Bladnoch. And surprisingly complex. I admit, I was not expecting this. A very nice first encounter with this Lowlander.
