Mark Watt sure knows how to make an entrance with Watt Whisky. Have you seen those eclectically packaged whisky’s in the Electric Coo series? Today I try one of his first releases, a 19 years old blended malt that matured on a sherry butt.
Ooh, surprisingly mineral nose. Pebbles, chalk, gyproc and tobacco leaves. After a few moments some cherries and raisins kick in, with a drop of balsamic vinegar on top. Very modest, but very nice. If you would insist, I’d dare say some Macallan was involved.
Oily on the palate, with an immediate prickle of both the alcohol and some black pepper. Then an explosion of cherry juice, candied sugar and some leather. Stout? Hint of chocolate, albeit in the background. Less subtle than the nose suggested. Juicy yet mildly drying.
The medium long finish offers a whole plethora of dried fruit – dades, raisins – before the tannins turn your mouth completely dry.
It’s almost impossible not to like this. A typical Christmas dram. Around 115 EUR, but you might be hard pressed to find it now.
