Through the grapevine I heard that this blended malt consists of Macallan, Highland Park and Glenrothes and might also have some Tamdhu and Glenturret in the mix. If that were the case, then this would actually be the malt-base of the Famous Grouse, sans the grain. Not sure if that is a compliment. On the other hand, they are each and every one of them great malts. And with XO on the label, which stands for Extra Old, I presume, this might in fact be a stunner.
Oh, my, what a wonderfully old school nose. Very waxy and creamy and fruity. Reminds me of plum pie, baked apples in honey, autumn leaves, roots and a dusty back room in the local library. Even though there is no age statement on the label, the nose dose the XO mention justice. This smells old indeed.
The body is rather light, but on the palate it continues where the nose left off and offers some earthy notes next to the dark fruit – even something peaty. Not like an Ileach, of course, but still. Could that be the HP in the mix? The autumn leaves reappear and some tobacco joins in. Walnuts? Soft on the spices, yet feisty.
A big hit of woodspice hits me in the finihs, but then it slowly dies on all kinds of dark notes like a liqueur of dades.
Well, whatever the composition of this blended malt, this is a lovely whisky and would do very well as an after dinner dram.
