Alfred Prenzlow is an artist living in Leverkusen (Germany), who became famous for his paintings and sketches of everything to do with whisky. In the Prenzlow Portfolio Collection, released by Jack Wiebers, are four Islay whiskies: a Bruichladdich, a Bunnahabhain, an Ardbeg and this Bowmore from 1998.
The nose starts off immediately very pronounced on vanilla, seaweeds and butane gas. On the second whiff, that is opholstered with kelp and moss and a scent that reminds me of the burning of a Christmas tree. Some liquorice and mint and an unexpected hint of green banana. Butterscotch after a few minutes. A few drops of water make it herbal. Hay and garden herbs appear. Very pleasant and rather typical young Bowmore on the nose.
Round and mouthcoating with a peppery attack. Lime juice mixed with oyster sap. Green tea and camphor. Coriander! The smokiness kicks in midpalate. Garden herbs again. This is a rather green Bowmore. Adding water makes it somewhat sharper and greener, if you know what I mean.
In the long finish, it evolves towards salty liquorice. Salmiak. Ricola cough candy. Wonderful.
Very feisty and complex Bowmore, despite the young age. I am a fan!
