Now that the sun sets a bit earlier and the temperatures start to drop, I felt the time right to taste some peated whisky. Let me open the debates with this Bowmore from Wemyss, nicknamed Peat Smoked Herring. Sounds promising.
Lovely nose on wet rocks and loads of salt smoke on the one hand, loads of citrus on the other: grapefruit, lemon and lime. Maybe even some bergamot. Not a trace of the smoked herring, though. But that does not make this nose any less good. Au contraire, mes amis.
Nice mouth feel, although I would not have minded a bit more body. But it makes up for that with wonderful tastes of citrus fruit, something candy-like even, vanilla, honey and some olive oil. Sprinkle some spices over the whole: pepper, ginger and a twig of mint. Nice. And of course it is tremendously smoky with a salty edge, as it should be with Bowmore.
The finish is long, sweet and smoky. It dances on the palate.
Peat Smoked Herring? What herring? I would have called this one Peat Smoked Candy. But it certainly is good!
