The previous Bowmore ‘46’ was a 12 Year Old from 2002, released last year. This bourbon cask was allowed two extra years of maturation and yielded 330 bottles. As the name of the series suggests, it is cut to a drinking strength of 46%. It is a very pale whisky.
Typical though fresh nose with malt, grasses, some peat and something that reminds me of a loaf of white bread. Some salmiak. Suddenly goat cheese with honey pops up. This evolves toward yoghurt with apple. This is quite pleasant, despite the simplicity.
The body is somewhat light in my opinion. The fruit is now more apple and lemon, with quite some pepper over it. The maritime elements, which were somewhat absent on the nose, shine through nicely on the palate. Liquorice, ginger and some seaweeds. This is a classic Bowmore now. What’s not to like?
The finish is rather short, but a nice smokiness develops with a salty edge.
Very accessible and quaffable Bowmore. The previous release was 52 EUR, the new one – with two extra years – will cost you 69 EUR.
