The Italian bottler Wilson & Morgan (does not really sound Italian, now does it?) bottled this sherry finshed Bowmore in 2012. Wilson & Morgan was founded by current CEO Fabio Rossi, who followed in his father Mario’s footsteps, who in turn took over the business of his father Guiseppe. Guiseppe was importer of fine wines and oils in the roaring twenties, active in Venice. Fabio has since then moved operations to Treviso, a popular holiday resort in Italy.
This Bowmore smells of dark fruit and bitter coffee, but also of salty gravy. Some marzipan, dancing on a bed of seaweeds. Sounds good, but still it seems a bit out of balance, to be honest.
But that is rectified on the palate. Creamy and soft, well seasoned, with a good balance between the maritime elements on the one hand and chocolate, figs and cappuccino on the other. The marzipan is still there. Feel free to throw some hazelnuts in the mix.
The finish shows a slight bitterness and wonderful smokiness. Good!
The nose was the only element on this whisky that did not really convince me, but the palate and the finish make this a fine Bowmore. Culinary tip: taste it together with a smoked salmon covered toast. You will be amazed. Thanks to Jeroen for the sample.
