Cabinets, Cabinets and more Cabinets

Given the recent discussions around cabinet size, collection size, number of open bottles, and related issues on other threads, I thought this might be a good place for ideas to congregate.

This is an area of my hobby that takes up a lot of my bandwith and I’m interested in how other people approach this.

@Nozinan, CABINETS, a great topic for discussion! This matter has been discussed, yet no thread contains a collection of these discussions. Now we have one.

In 2014 my blood was boiling because I had bottles squirrelled away in various parts of my home. It was very awkward. Frustration led to confusion, then finally, action.

At the time I had one cabinet. A single stand-alone unit with a hutch-style drop-down door, a glass shelf, two wooden shelves, and cupboard space on the bottom. A fairly standard unit. I had crammed as many as 80 bottles into this unit; whisky, brandy, rum, white spirits, and various styles of wine and fortified wines. It was overflowing. My “open” bottles were in one location; however, I had many bottles and boxes of bottles stashed wherever I could find a safe place.

I searched diligently to source attractive cabinets. There are very few cabinets designed for heavy loads, and at the same time appropriate for bottle storage, other than book shelves.

Book shelf hunting I went.

I found a style of bookshelves matching our (my wife’s acceptance of these shelves was something I strongly considered) dining room table. With my then 21 YO daughter in tow, off we went. The shelves were a perfect match from the same manufacturer. Fortunately for me, my daughter was a classmate of the owner’s daughter and a friends and family discount was was factored into the purchase. I was looking for one large or two smaller units. When the dust had settled I was the proud owner of two large, and one smaller, book shelves.

To this day I do not regret buying these units. They are only eleven inches deep and hold 2-3 rows of bottles on each shelf.

Glassware, a convenient and appropriate place for glassware now exists near the source, how convenient.

Recently I’ve been involved in video tastings with friends, the shelves also provide a nice backdrop for these occasions. I do not regret purchasing these shelving units. Perhaps someday I will acquire more.
