Did you know that Caledonian was initially simply called Edinburgh Distillery? When it was founded in 1885 it was even one of Scotland's largest grain distilleries. But she only lasted for a full century. Since 1988 she's closed and the buildings have been turned into a housing complex. Only the high chimney is still visible near Haymarket. I will try a hogshead that was put to sleep in 1987 and bottled at the age of 28 years old. I am trying it head-to-head with cask #28.332 that was bottled two months prior by WhiskyBroker.

Popcorn with butter, pencil shavings… I repeat myself. Yet there is a slight difference. This one also offers some coconut milk and dim sum! Yes you've read that correct. Surprisingly umami. Vanilla and autumn leaves. This is good!

On the palate it is nigh identical to cask #28.332 from WhiskyBroker. Creamy, sweet on pencil shavings, pepper, vanilla. But this one has some more white chocolate, quinine, Jelly Beans and wood glue. That last part becomes a tad too dominant.

The finish is medium long, start on white pepper and vanilla and then evolves towards salted popcorn.

How much that each cask is so individual. This one offers a little less sweetness on the nose, but some wood glue on the palate and the finish is a bit longer, albeit a tad salty. Nice head-to-head.
