Caledonian was a grain distillery west of the capital, founded in 1855 and closed in 1988, at the time property of Diageo who had just taken over Guinness. Coincidentally (or not), there is still a brewery in Edinbrugh operating under the Caledonian name. Where the distillery once stood, you will now find only family housing. I tasted this one at the Scott’s Selection booth at a recent whisky festival.
As can be expected from an aged single grain, it is pretty similar to a bourbon. Honeysweet vanilla, coconut and ginger, but also nice hints of oak. Full and creamy. Some banana and white fruit. Finally some varnish or wood glue, which is, in this case, a plus.
On the palate, it is both soft and fresh. Eucalyptus, maybe? Again creamy and fruity and very bourbonny, if you get my meaning.
Very attractive finish, that fades warm and gently.
Still available for around 160 EUR.
