Cambus 27 Year Old 1991 Mobsters on Mopeds

The girls and boys from Biopsy (or BYOB-C which is the acronym for Bring Your Own Bottle Club) surprised us last year with the great range Lads of Lobland. They now return with a new series – Mobsters on Mopeds – in which they first released a lovely sherried Blair Athol. Their second bottling is something else: a single grain! Cambus – founded in 1813 close to Stirling – had two Lomond Stills that were silenced for good in 1993. Nowadays it is a hypermodern cooperage. Since all production was destined for the blenders (Johnnie Walker first and foremost) there are no official releases. But independent bottlings are few and far between as well. So let’s be happy that this Belgian club released this 27 Year Old single grain for us.

It’s quite a fruit bomb on the nose, that reminds me more of an Irish whiskey than a single grain. Kiwi, banana, white fruit, pineapple, hazelnuts and chestnuts. But that is not all. Young apricots, apple sauce, gooseberries, mango and papaya. Oh, my, lovely! Very sweet, but very pleasant. Even a touch waxy and fresh on mint.

The arrival is sturdy. Feisty on white pepper and some liquorice, but mostly summery sweet on white fruit, gooseberries and litchi. Some white chocolate and marzipan. Mint returns. Nice note of popcorn. Very accessible and summery. I am a fan!

The finish is medium long, mildly peppery, warm and fresh at the same time. A hint of brown sugar at the death.

Summer in your glass! Liquid dessert. Very nice nose and fantastic palate. Yup, I was able to add bottle 58 of 58 to my collection.
