I previously tasted two single casks under the name ‘Just Hatched’ from this New Zealand distillery. They were both oloroso single casks. Today I’ll try the new ‘Growing Wings’, which matured just a tad longer. But it remains very young, obviously. This is poured from a 375ml sample, which was offered to me by my buddy Marcel. Thx! To be honest, the nose is quite funky. Chicken broth with barely any room for fruit greets my nostrils. Dried peach is completely drowned out by green garden herbs and salt. Quite umami on the nose. Nicely oily on the palate. Almost syrupy, in fact. But at the same time quite piquant. The ABV is the culprit. But on the palate, I do get some sweet notes if I work for it. Think plums, apricots and a handful of sultanas. Nevertheless it is again quite umami and green if you know what I mean. The spices on duty are nutmeg, cinnamon, chili peppers and celery salt! The finish is very spicy, intense and lasts very long. Celery salt and walnuts at the death. It reminds me of cask #104 that I tried previously, but the expectations were not completely fulfilled this time. And while I appreciate it has to travel half the world to reach our shores, 150 EUR for a half bottle is quite unaffordable.
