Crown Spirits, a new Belgian bottler from Bruges, has launched three single grains in 2021, each a single cask at cask strength and each time at the very young age of 43 months – of which the first 30 months on a classic first fill bourbon barrel and then a finish of 13 months on a special cask, in this case a Margaux red wine cask. Only 56 bottles were released at a cask strength of 58.9%. The distillate was distilled by Filip Braeckman of the distillery of the same name in Oudenaarde. Very nice nose on rye bread with strawberry jam, pine and green garden herbs. A hint of coconut meat in the background. A touch of acetone shines through but strangely does not disturb. On the contrary. It gives this grain a lift. Amusing! Nicely oily and despite the firm arrival, it does not burn the taste buds at all. Now it quickly becomes very clear that this is grain whisky, because in addition to acetone, now also some wood glue and a lot of coconut come through. The red fruit explodes on the tongue and is accompanied by a firm spiciness in the form of cinnamon and cloves. This is very tasty! The finish is particularly long, very spicy and sweet sweet on the deathbed. What a nice grain – and then homegrown too.
