The yearly Distillers Edition of most Diageo malts is double matured; in the case of Dalwhinnie on oloroso sherry casks. This is the most recent one, distilled in 2000 and released this year.

Next to vanilla and honey, this nose offers mostly dark fruit like plums, raisins and even a fresh fig. Some marmalade of rhubarb. Make that rhubarb pastry. Wet cake, hint of hazelnut and even gingerbread. This is a winter dram.

Unfortunately, it has not body whatsoever. This is watery at best. The dram is very malty with a truckload of caramel and honey, a bit of vanilla and hence honeysweet. The sherry cask enhances that with some sour agrums. Midly spicy on nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves.

The finish is medium long.

If you like (very) sweet, then you will appreciate this malt, surely, but for me it’s just a tad too much.
