Dalwhinnie is one of the first distilleries I visited (way back in 2010). A lovely distillery at an even lovelier location. But they do not have many expressions. Besides the classic Dalwhinnie 15, they only have the yearly Distillers Edition and – recently released – the NAS expression Winter’s Gold. Few and far between are the special releases, like this one. The Dalwhinnie Triple Matured was released in 2013 for the Friends of the Classic Malts. I am not sure which three cask types were used, though.

Well hello there! If you give the nose a bit of time, it opens up to a complex dram with loads of honey, sweet but roasted malt, jelly beans, baklava, gooseberries and some floral elements with rosewater in the lead. Not perfumy, mind you! Some mashed banana, mashed potatoes and – don’t laugh – spices from the Indian kitchen. This is very much to my liking. What a lovely surprise.

The body is somewhat light, the liquid immediately honey sweet and peppery. It dances on the tongue! Again baklava comes to mind. Sweet, spicy, fruity and hearty at the same time. Different types of sugars in the mix, it seems. Again a good helping of honey. The floral element now makes place for more fruitiness in the guise of strawberry, peach and banana.

The finish is long and even offers a hint of woodsmoke.

Yes, this is a whisky for those with a sweet tooth, but boy is it good! A liquid dessert. You can still find it for 75 to 85 EUR. Gotta get me one.
