@Rex-Alban, Great find! Also, @HP12 started a similar discussion a few months ago...

@whiskyshiba this isn't about finding a bargain but about finding a rare or discontinued bottling. 12yo Aberlour is on sale in my local shop for £17, sure that's a bargain.
I suppose Scotland would be the only place where one could find a discontued bottle. Typically most stockist would have a high turn-over of whisky. But in sleepy Scottish villages off the tourist trail one finds the unusual.
In the Drumnadrochit post office for example I found this bottle royalmilewhiskies.com/product.asp/… , in another I found this royalmilewhiskies.com/product.asp/…, and in another this royalmilewhiskies.com/product.asp/…, and so on royalmilewhiskies.com/product.asp/…, and so on royalmilewhiskies.com/product.asp/… the idea?

Oops!...made a mess of that. This is when the ability to edit posts would be handy. Anyway I'm sure you get the point of the discussion.

In my opinion, in order to find whisky gem at low-cost you have to search in market that sell material derived from evictions or bankruptcy or relocation... . In this places I found 1 bottle of Aberlour 5y Unblended whisky 50 cl for italian market at 12€,---- 1 bottle of Glenlivet 12y years '80 Unblended malt 75cl------ 1 bottle of Chivas Regal 12 y 1,5l decanter years '80 at 10€------- 1 bottle of Macallan 10y years '80 75cl €20

@Rex-Alban I found a bottle of Ardbeg Airigh Nam Beast that was discontinued in all great Britain in a liquor store in New Jersey. They sold it for 63$. This was not discontinued for a long time but I am still proud of this find since it is a limited edition. I don't collect whiskys, when I buy one I drink it, but I have to admit that I tear drop each time a pour myself a dram out of this one.... it is excellent.

@Kutter I have a bottle of the beast in my cabinet. Two Ardbeg I will not be opening is Rollercoaster and Supernove 2011, I have them in the cabinet. After tasting and finishing my first bottle I've decided to sell the other. They're not nice whiskies!

@Rex-Alban, My mistake. Here in California, its difficult to find rare or discontinued bottles w/o paying for it dearly. But I did find the Bowmore 30YR "Seadragon for $380 a few months back; if that counts. I've been told that it fetches for over $600 at auction now.

@whiskyshiba that's the spirit. It's all about finding a whisky that starts an excitedly nervous response.

@Rex-Alban, I found an Aberlour A'Bhunah batch 27 in a small liquor store in Savannah a few months ago. I was surprised to find this batch since they are selling batch 33 now I think.

Rare whisky does not mean expensive whisky. I've found many of my rare whiskies in little corner shops or out of the way licensed grocers, of which there are an abundance of in Scotland.
Forget for a moment those expensive rare collectable whiskies we all dream of owning and drinking, but think of the whisky you found and got you all excited. It is not the value of the whisky that drives me but the excitement of finding a rare/dicontinued bottle.
My best "find" was a Campbeltown Loch 21yo, a blend from J&A Mitchell (Springbank). I paid £36.95 for that from Strachans in Ballater, Aberdeenshire. Ralfy recenlty did a review of that one. youtube.com/watch/…
So the question is......what was your best "find"?
