Desert Island Drams

0 7

Weesnifter started a discussion

Some of the Brits amongst us may be familiar with a radio programme called Desert Island Discs, for those who are not familiar the show invited a guest to select 10 records to take with them to a hypothetical island they were to be marooned on. The guest then went on to explain their choices and any memories they invoked etc; you get the idea. Anyway, as a variation on a theme how about desert island drams? So on to the scenario.....you're a castaway on a desert island of your dreams, everything you could wish for except a bar! However, your luck is in and you can choose up to 10 bottles of whisky or whiskey to take with you. Remember you might be there a long time, so choose wisely!

Can I have 10 cases instead of 10 bottles?

Brora 30 yo: Why select a whisky I've never tried? Because it's a desert island and because it's Brora. I think there's a 99.99% chance that I'll like it just fine.

Black Bull 30 yo: 10 cases of this might not be enough. Make it 10 barrels.

Lagavulin 16 yo: For days ending in 'y."

Ardbeg Uiegadail: For days with a "d" in them.

Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye: Because a little goes a long way.

GlenDronach 15 yo: Almost went with A'bunadh for a sherry bomb, but this might be a safer long-term choice.

Aberlour A'bunadh: Then again, safe is boring.

Highland Park 18 yo

Mortlach 15 yo

Plus one decent all-purpose blend or single malt for when I'm in a mood for casual drinking, not thinking about what I'm drinking.

NB 'Desert island whiskies' discussion from 2009.

As for selecting 10, it will look like a selection of any 10 from my favourites list.

I agree with @WhiskyBee that if you are in for a Penny you might as well be in for a Pound. Not bottles for me, or even cases, but casks and barrels would be the size of my containers. And, like @Wodha in the last discussion, I would also assume that they would be housed in my climate-controlled underground bunker on the island.

Here's the thing with casks though, the spirit would continue to age...I'll take a stainless steel drum (with a spigot) of the following:

An older Kuriazawa...maybe that 68 that made its way into the world recently, or the 72 that I have in the basement waiting for an occasion.

George T Stagg. Nuff said.

8 year old Talisker bottled in the 70s. Seriously epic....puts modern whiskies to shame.

An old Clyelish, there's a Lombard's Jewels of Scotland bottling locally right now that's too expensive, but it's very good. (I think it's a 21 year old 1982 so it's been in the bottle a while)

Glenfarclas 40

A Willet I had courtesy of Gene, Sopressetta? Whatever it was called it was dynamite!

St Magadalen old and rare...OMG

Stitzle Weller era Pappy 15

One of those old Lagavulins that my friends tasted at the distillery and that they raved so highly about

Last one...maybe a Brora 25 or a Whitehorse Lagavulin.

How did I leave Springbank off the list??? Hmm...Glenfarclas 40 gets cut for a 68 or so Springbank. :-)

Wow ... How to choose? How long do I have to be there? Am I alone or with friends and do I have to share?

Assuming I am increasing my intake to double what I drink now, 10 bottles should last about a year and a half.unles, they are the 700 cc bottles. Then I would be down by 4 weeks. Sorry, I don't usually have more than 1-2 drams on a good week and that's about 60 cc. Believe me if I had the opportunity...

Anyway what would I choose? Assuming I could have any bottle and that I would someday be rescued to have some of the same Whisky again in the future ( so I don't have to double up....:

Aberlour A'Bunadh . Batch 28 if it's as good as I read, or 33 ( or 44) Bladnoch 10 year old sherry cask ( Raymond Armstrong ownership -current) 55% Bruichladdich Peat Bruichladdich Octomore Glendronach 15 year Balvenie 15 year old single cask number 1976 Amrut intermediate Sherry Amrut Portonova Springbank 12 YO claret wood cask strength Compass Box Peat Monster

If I was never getting off the island, and could only have 10 bottles, I would cut down on the variety a little, decrease my dramming to 1 per week, giving me 4.5 years of pleasure.

I would probably drop the Balvenie, Glendronach, Bruichladdich Peat, and add an extra A'Bunadh , Bladnoch and Amrut Intermediate Sherry.

I would probably only have 20 cc portions of the octomore, A'Bunadh and Bladnoch, to make me last longer.

Given the 4.5 year supply, I would probably ask for some barley seeds (we can have anything we want...), some oak barrels, and wine grapes.

I would make a quick sherry while I plant the barley, distill some good new make, put in in my sherry casks and let it mature ( under active supervision) until it was Whisky. Of course, not being able to drink as much as I produced, I could eventually have some superbly aged Whisky.

Of course, this would also guarantee my rescue ( so I could go back to the good stuff),because the tax man would come looking for his share and I'd get off the island with him...
