Distinct Aromas from Casks

From my limited experience about scotch , it appears that there are distinct aromas linked to the casks in which the spirit is aged . eg. a vanilla aromas normally hints at American oak . Are there any such distinct links of aromas to casks used ? Is it possible to identify with precision about the cask used for maturation from the aromas ??

From my experience the answer is generally yes, although there are always exceptions and blending of casks that throws you off. Add peat into the mix and you end up having to distinguish different types of smoke (peaty vs wood) as well as various other flavours before you end up with what casks where used.

Generally from my tasting you get coconut and vanilla from bourbon casks, raisins and tannins from sherry casks and weird meaty flavours from wine casks. When you start doing cask finishes you end up with combinations of flavours and things get more fun. You probably can pick out definite cask types from nosing and tasting, but I'm still at a level where I can get a best guess.
