I don’t believe it! It seems that I have never – NEVER! – tried a grain whisky from Dumbarton before. This distillery – which was the home base of Ballantine’s so to speak – was founded in 1938 and closed in 1991. The buildings have been demolished.
Lovely notes of unripe banana, marzipan, wood and pencil shavings, popcorn and honey. That’s the nose of this lovely grain in a nutshell. Some white chocolate and a fresh floral note. Buttercups? Brésilienne nuts and whipped cream! Some juicy apricot in the background. Very good.
It is creamy in the mouth, almost syrupy. Lots of oak spices, now. Think cloves and cinnamon. Honey arrives to soften things up a bit. Some tropical fruit appears. Pineapple, banana and that apricot again. The whipped cream returns, this time on a bit of coconut. This is very good.
The coconut and woodsmoke are king in the surprisingly long finish, but it remains very sweet throughout.
Wonderful grain indeed. Note to self: find more Dumbarton!
