The French Distillerie des Menhirs can be found near Plomelin, Brittany, a bit south of Quimper and not too far from the Gulf of Biscaya. It was already founded in 1986 by Guy de Lay, who distilled pommeau and ciders from local apples. In 1998 he also turned to whisky, but instead of using barley, he turned to locally grown buckwheat as the main ingredient. Eddu is Britton for buckwheat, you see? This Grey Rock is a blended grain, meaning there are some other grains in the mix as well. It matured in small French oak casks.

The nose is very light and floral with notes of vanilla and jasmin. A little bit of honey and some brown sugar. Very sweet, a bit over the top in my book.

The body is quite pleasant. On the palate it is very sweet as well with notes of oranges and apricots, but it also has something chemical that reminds me a bit of medicine. Cough syrup, but the light colored one if you know what I mean. Not my cuppa.

The finish is rather short with a note of cinnamon and even a slight saltiness that took me by surprise.

A candy-like sweet grain that will set you back about 35 EUR. Nice to try on holiday in Brittany, I suppose, but otherwise I would leave it be.
