Flying with whisky - What is your record?

2 17

I've heard tales about bringing whisky from one place to another. Especially when the bottles are expensive, the journey can be fraught with anxiety. Like the time I flew from Vancouver and checked my carry-on size luggage containing 6 bottles (two were 500 cc) including a Whistlepig Boss Hog I had purchased for @paddockjudge. That was a total of 3.95 L.

Tonight I flew home from Calgary. At first I packed 6 bottles in one suitcase and five in the other then my in-laws insisted I bring the Glenfiddich 18 and my wife packed that into the suitcase with 6 bottle (and left the other with 5) for a total 12 bottles plus 2 minis.

I am pleased to report that all 14 items arrived intact save one (easily fixable) dent in the canister protecting one of the Amrut peated minis. So 8.9 litres (pictured below) is my new record!

Good job! I recently checked in 3 bottles of glüwhein, that's my current record. They all made the trip!

International Haul

From New Mexico, USA to Northern Ontario, Canada on three connecting flights.

After meeting resistance during this recon exercise, I acquired the assistance of some established local muscle to move the merchandise to ABQ Airport by traditional means

Not a drop of the whiskey haul was spilled from the seven bottles and eight minis, three of which were plastic (and consumed one per flight:)

@paddockjudge That looks like the 90s release Gooderham & Worts... is it? Or did I miss some kind of throwback label redesign? Or has it perhaps been launched south of the border and that's the look they went with there?

Inquiring minds and all that. :)

Also, those are some impressive looking local muscle.

@paddockjudge Very nice. Have you done a side-by-side? How does it compare to the current release? Similar flavour profile?

In 2011 I flew home (Seattle) from Islay, Scotland with eight hard-to-find bottles. The customs police in the USA read my declaration stating "8 bottles whisky" and said, "Finally, someone who knows how to spell 'whisky'. Welcome home."

Last month I returned from Italy with just two bottles, no record, but I know you want to see them. Both from a new Italian distillery called Puni. I found them in Venice. I bought one of each, "Nova" and "Alba" and both are "Batch No.1". I haven't opened them yet, saving that for a special event. Have any of you tasted Puni yet?

@paddockjudge Looks like there might be a fair bit of Molson's Muscle in the mix.

@Nelom, I've not opened the '90's G&W, but when I do it will be H2H with the 2016 release....as for the local muscle ... those are some bad mofo's !

@Nozinan ,good to know as I will be flying to Nova Scotia next summer and will be looking to bring back multiple bottles. Is that an Amrut Intermediate Sherry hiding back there? I seem to remember being told that another back up was not required. Plus it looks like the older packaging, so it must be a lower batch #. Kid in a candy store :)

@Astroke That is indeed an Amrut IS in the background. In September my brother in low printed out some $25 off coupons (on $100 spend) at Liquor Depot. I was able to get this, the Lag 8 and the Glendronach single cask for an avg price of about $92 each, tax in, and all under $100.

The packaging is old because it's the same batch 5 that I bought in Calgary in 1992. I'm interested in comparing to more recent batches but didn't see any in my travels this year (also wasn't looking). They would be easier to fit in suitcase.

@Nozinan I have batch 15, bottled in 2014 (both bottles). I have never heard much about any batch past 5 so although I really enjoy mine there seems to be quite the gap between batches. Amazing that there are so many stores in Calgary/Alberta with older stock. Love to go on a whiskey hunt there.
