Four Roses Small Batch Barrel matured for between 11 and 17 years and was then brought together – married as they love to say in the industry – at cask strength before being bottled. The 2012 batch has an ABV of 55.7%.

The nose is wonderfully round and sweet on citrus peels, candied oranges and loads of vanilla. A hint of candied sugar and toffee apples (what we call pomme d’amour) as well as some sniffing tobacco. The spices are very soft and not outspoken, emphasizing the sweetness of the nose. In the background I get a hint of burnt wood as well as some coconut. A single leaf of mint gives it a fresh uplift. I find this nose quite enticing.

It is creamy, almost syrupy, on the palate. The spices are very loud now, with cinnamon and ginger, but also a big chili pepper in the mix. The fruit remains mostly citrus, but all of it candied, even sugared. A hint of cocoa shines through. This is simply delicious!

In the finish, which lingers and remains spicy throughout, the toffee apples reappear.

Rather sweet, but fairly fruity bourbon that makes me long for another shot. Nice!

Nice review. I am quite enamored of this - it is huge on the fruit cup and coconut. The only fault I have found is that it declines rapidly. I have been through several bottles of this, and within a month, it is not the same bourbon. Drink or decant!
