Gibson's Finest Bold?

I was in an LCBO the day before yesterday and was in a bit of a hurry, so unfortunately I didn't think to take any pictures, but there were mini samples of something galled "Gibson's Finest Bold" attached to large bottles of Gibson's Finest Sterling. The labels were black-ish, but that's pretty much all I know or took the time to look for.

Does anyone know anything else about this product? I'm assuming it's some new Gibson product coming down the pike.

I checked my local LCBO yesterday and none of the bottles there had these samples, so I also checked Gibson's website and did some Googling, but have come up empty.

I know nothing of this. If @paddockjudge is correct, this might be the start of Gibson's move towards NAS.....did you happen to get a look at the ABV? A few Canadian distillers/producers have started to put out younger whisky, but at higher ABV so it has a bit of a different appeal to drinkers (and perhaps, so that the strength of the alcohol covers some of the insufficiencies...)

I unfortunately did not look more carefully so I don't know the ABV. I was running late and just wanted to grab a bottle and get out of there as quickly as possible.

Upon a little bit further Googling, I found a site called LDB Wholesale (a BC company) that has Gibson's Finest Bold listed in an Excel spreadsheet titled "Activated Products" and it's listed there with an 8 year age statement. Take that for what it's worth. :)

Here's a link to the spreadsheet:

Gibson's Finest Bold Will be launching in June: 8 years old, 46% ABV, Dark in color - should be very tasty.

@Doylerbuger Can you give us a link to where you found this info? I would like to read some more about it.

Thanks.

June, eh? I've been popping into my two local LCBOs every few days, looking for the minis but the only Gibson's extras I find are tumblers. I also Googled for the UPC listed in that spreadsheet I linked, but it didn't return anything.

I'm kicking myself for either not just buying a Gibson's Sterling to get that mini, or stopping for a few seconds to take some pictures. Then again, if it's launching in the next three weeks I suppose I can wait. :)

But yeah, @Doylerbuger, if you've got a site or something I too would be interested. Oh, and welcome to the site.

BC Liquor now have a listing:

www.bcliquorstores.com/product/635417

They're asking $24.99 for 750 ml.

Nothing at LCBO yet, but using BC Liquor's price as a guide, I expect LCBO to land at around $30.

@Nelom I looked at the Rum Howler review that you gave us the link to and I have a few comments:

  1. I don't know if I buy the argument that caramel colour affects the taste of the spirit as much as he claims. I don't like e150a anymore than anyone else does, but I don't think it actually imparts a taste when people have done blind tastings.

  2. He says a lot of nice things that then are in contrast to his criticisms.

  3. It's a sample review which makes me wonder...what did he really think of it?

I would be interested in trying it before I buy it. For a Canadian whisky the ABV is intriguing and it doesn't seem to cost too much, but I don't have room in my cabinet for something that I may never want to reach for a second time.

@Nozinan Yes, I'm intrigued as well, but like you I'm not sure that it's worth picking up an entire bottle. It's also possible they may come out with a 375 ml bottling, they do have the 12 YO in that size.

Either way, for now I'll hold off until there's more reviews out there.

It's been on the LCBO website for more than a week now, but it's finally starting to show up as being in stock in a few stores. I'm assuming over the next few days and weeks it'll spread across the province.

They're asking $29.45 for a bottle:

@Nelom I'm willing to buy it and try it if someone is willing to take it off my hands without charging me to do so if I don't like it.

@Nozinan If you do buy it and don't like it, I'll trade you that opened bottle of Powers Gold that you tried at the summit. I don't remember your thoughts on it, but personally I just can't get into it. I'd guesstimate there's probably 550+ ml left.
